How the prize works

Eligibility

  • Open to students, and to postdocs who received their PhD (or equivalent) no more than two calendar years before the award year—for the 2027 prize, no earlier than 2025.
  • The talk must be submitted to, and accepted in, the conference programme, as a minisymposium or contributed talk. For co-authored work, the candidate must be the speaker.
  • Exceptions to the two-year rule may be considered for career interruptions or delays, e.g. for child bearing, child rearing, or elder care.

How to apply

  • Submit a completed paper or an extended work in progress, of 30 pages or less, as a PDF, together with a CV of no more than two pages.
  • Submissions are due no later than five months before the conference.
  • Applying for the prize is separate from taking part in the conference: submit your talk abstract through the conference website, and your paper to the prize.

Selection

  • A committee of up to four SIAG/FME members, announced on the conference website, reviews the submissions.
  • Four to six finalists are shortlisted for the innovation, originality, and potential impact of their work, and are informed at least three months before the conference.
  • Finalists give a 25-minute talk in a dedicated prize session; the judges weigh the delivery of the presentation together with the quality of the work.

The award

  • Each winner receives a $200 cash award and a letter certifying the award, with its citation.
  • Winners are announced at the conference; the award and letter are sent afterwards, and the result is published in SIAM media.

Submissions for the 2027 prize are open.

Deadline: February 15, 2027, through SIAM’s prize portal.
